My New Year’s resolutions for 2021 were to do more, think less, stay focused and love myself.
Heading into 2022, my resolutions are all about courage and creativity. Specifically, one of my mantras for 2022 is: Create! I’m excited to create more stuff as I continue on my path to getting published, which is one of the overall goals of Storyteller Academy. I’ve been a member since August 2020 and I’ve learned a lot about the KidLit (aka children’s book) industry. It’s a positive and encouraging community of authors and illustrators. Now it’s a matter of getting more feedback and putting in the work throughout the creative process and making sure my manuscript is the best it can be before submitting queries to agents.
The other part of my New Year’s resolution can be summed up in one word: Courage. It takes courage to put yourself and your work out there, not to mention to take criticism and rejection. As mentioned, one of my main goals is to get an agent and publish my first book. Another main goal is to sell a TV pilot. I’ve been taking different writing courses and workshops for years in pursuit of these goals. I’ve learned a lot about the TV and film industry, and I know my writing has improved, but I still have to keep working hard at the process to continue honing my craft and learning how to pitch and sell myself.
I also recently read about an interesting way to think of your New Year’s resolutions by asking yourself these three questions:
- What do I want to stop doing?
- What do I want to keep doing?
- What do I want to be true a year from now?
I’d like to stop doubting myself and stop my negative thoughts. It’s difficult as I’ve always struggled with self-esteem, but it’s a matter of training my brain to focus more on gratitude and positivity. I’d like to keep writing and working toward my goals and being productive. I’d like to be living in a new place a year from now and thriving in my personal and professional life.
Thus, my mantra for 2022 is to Be Creative and Be Courageous! Cheers to 2022! May this upcoming year bring you love, happiness, joy (which I guess is similar to happiness, but hey, you can never have too much!), wonder, success and lots of fun!
