Practicing Kindness and Forming Connections: My Goals for 2018

It’s the final day of 2017, and as always, it’s time to make some resolutions for the new year! My resolutions for this year consisted of one main goal: to be more adventurous. I was able to accomplish this by finally venturing out to the west coast with a trip to LA this past September. I enjoyed every minute of the trip, as I not only got to check out all the cool tourist attractions I hoped to see, but I got to meet the creator of one of my all-time favorite television shows. It was the perfect first visit, and all I can add is that I can’t wait to visit California again sometime, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Also this year, my family and I sadly said goodbye to our beloved cats, Missy and Twinky, but we also adopted two new cats in late April. We named them Bosco and Zoey, which incidentally sounds like it could be the name of an Odd Couple-type show, am I right? They’re feisty and full of life, and while they can never replace our old cats, they’ve brought us joy and we love them dearly. They’ll both be turning one in a month or so.

Another highlight of 2017 for me was that the long-awaited Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie premiered in November, and it was everything I wanted and more. (Shout out to Christie for sharing my lengthy, fangirly post with Craig and Raymie!) I’m looking forward to the upcoming Rocko’s Modern Life and Invader Zim TV specials set for 2018, although official air dates for both still have yet to be announced. I plan to do write-ups on each of them and will try my best not to summarize every major plot point like I did for TJM, haha.

And now, as I look ahead into 2018, I know what I’d like to accomplish this upcoming year, and here it is:

Practice kindness every day.

It’s true that a little act of kindness goes a long way, and kindness is contagious. I plan to make an active effort to perform at least one act of kindness every single day whether it’s for a stranger or a loved one, whether it’s something big or simply a small but meaningful gesture. Being kind to others doesn’t cost a thing, and it feels good to do good in the world, so it’s a win-win for everyone. In addition to practicing kindness to others, though, I want to be kinder to myself. I’ve stated many times how I’m always hard on myself, how I’m my own worst critic, and while I recognize these faults, it’s time I make a conscious effort to dismiss my own instinctual self-criticism and be kind to myself so that I can continue to grow.

Make strong connections.

I strive to step outside my comfort zone whenever I can, and one of the toughest things for me is putting myself out there. My goal is to attend at least one networking event this year and establish even just one strong connection. It will help me not only professionally but personally, as it’s always fun and interesting to meet someone new and get to know that person. Of course, as I continue to pursue my writing career, I aim to meet more people interested in my desired field of TV writing so that they can help me discover new opportunities and vice versa. It’s all about helping each other. As always, I look forward to what the future holds, and I’ll never give up on my dreams.

Well, those are my New Year’s resolutions; what are yours? Feel free to share! In the meantime, I wish you a delightful, invigorating and downright incredible 2018!
